How it works

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected directly by EU citizens every five years, by proportional representation, under each member state’s electoral law (Treaty on European Union, Article 14). Seats are allocated to member states; EU citizens living in another member state may vote there or in their home country, but only once.
