Two chambers, equal powersDue Camere, pari poteri

Parliament has a Chamber of Deputies (400 members) and a Senate (200 elected members, plus senators for life). Both are elected for five years and both must support the government. Since 2021, everyone aged 18 or over can vote for both chambers. Eight deputies and four senators are elected by Italians abroad.Il Parlamento è composto dalla Camera dei deputati (400 membri) e dal Senato (200 membri elettivi, più i senatori a vita). Law no. 180 of October 9, 2026, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale and in force since October 24, 2026, changes how both chambers are elected. It is a proportional system with preference votes and a bonus of seats for a list or coalition that reaches a set share of the vote in both chambers.
