Matthew Ritter District 1 covers parts of Hartford County. House Democrats unanimously elected Ritter as speaker of the state House in 2020. He began serving in the role at the start of the 2021 legislative session . In this role, Ritter controls when the House votes on legislation and assigns other representatives to committees. He is the only three term house speaker in Connecticut history.
