West Virginia State Senate 3-unexpired District

Current seat holder: Trenton Barnhart (R).

Trenton Barnhart

Trenton Barnhart is a Republican member of the West Virginia Senate representing District 3. He was born in St. Marys, West Virginia, and earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master of business administration from the University of Charleston. He works in banking and has held positions as a business development officer and commercial loan officer. Barnhart entered the Legislature in 2019, when then Gov. Jim Justice appointed him to the West Virginia House of Delegates following the resignation of Jason Harshbarger. He represented the 7th House district before later representing the 9th House district. During his House tenure, he served in Republican leadership and chaired the House Banking and Insurance Subcommittee. In January 2026, Gov. Patrick Morrisey appointed Barnhart to the Senate’s District 3 seat after longtime Sen. Donna Boley resigned. His current Senate committee assignments include Banking and Insurance, Confirmations, Economic Development, Education, Energy, Industry and Mining, and Finance.

“This is too high of a threshold for 'good old boy' deals and contracts, and there's nothing that enhances the value of the city's transactions or transparency. Basically, $50,000 is going to cover just about everything the city does, and it can go to the same contractor time after time after time. And I'm not sure why we wouldn't want a city to bid if it's a contract in excess of $25,000. It seems to me that the statute we have now is adequate and appropriate.” (The Real WV)
“Delegate Barnhart has served West Virginians in the 7th District with energy, integrity, and a deep commitment to conservative principles. I am honored to appoint him to the West Virginia Senate to succeed Senator Donna Boley, whose decades of service have shaped our state for the better.” (yahoo.com)
